Forward to my Article…
In order to maximize any skill to the fullest, it is paramount that we need to apply fundamental life skills. As I mentor photographers around the world, it is evident a person’s mental make-up is the greatest determinant to their success, REGARDLESS OF NATURAL ABILITY. Most people will try something for a year or two and give up. The typical road to success from highly successful people is usually a decade of blood, sweat and tears. All one has to do is examine the life of an Olympic athlete. Even the 16 year old gymnast has a decade or more of dedicated practice. Consider how long it takes to accomplish the following… a college degree, earning a black belt, becoming an Eagle Scout, concert violinist or musician, a professional athlete, a physician, an attorney, a CPA, etc. There are no shortcuts in life but a mentor and good advice can certainly shorten the process.
When we start applying the right life skills, our path to success is greatly shortened. As for myself, I struggled to find all the answers on my own and it took me about 15 years to start putting things together. Experiencing countless failures and successes has been a tremendous asset to my teaching and coaching career. I am proud to have developed many world class photographers and instead of taking them 15 years like myself, the process is greatly shortened, even down to a couple years before launching a successful artistic career- one of the hardest professions in the world!
Once I started applying these skills into my life, my own personal success began to take off, not instantly, but slowly but surely. I am still learning of course and I still have many issues I’ve got to work through myself too. Life is a never ending learning process and once we stop exploring, discovering and pushing ourselves with new challenges, life settles into a safe, secure and often uneventful rhythm. The most exciting thing about achieving excellence is the prospect of new and exciting opportunities that consistently present themselves. Everyday becomes an adventure and your world just keeps getting bigger and better at the point where life becomes unbelievably rich and exciting. I wouldn’t say I’m a rich man but I do feel blessed that I can provide for my family and live a life the way I want to design it. I meet interesting people and make friends around the world and get asked to share my knowledge to thousands every year and help them with their journeys. I have a passion for what I do and as I grow, my career gets better and more exciting every year.
I personally live by my 12 Radical Rules to Success and I hope they will also help you on your journey to success.
Wishing you the very best in 2013!
