Charge your Sony Camera Battery with a USB Power Stick

Battery power is what fuels your camera- no juice, no pictures. What happens when you run out of power and there are no electricity outlets to plug in your battery charger? Many of the newer Sony cameras charge their batteries inside the camera and use a 5V DC charge with a micro USB connector which is very common for charging smart phones- (light bulb goes off in my head)

Since our power hungry smartphones and tablets need to be recharged more than once a day with typical use, many of us use portable battery power to charge our phones on the fly. Why not use a USB portable charger to charge your camera battery? I have three Sony cameras that use a 5V charge so I put it to the test.

What You Need:

  • Micro USB cable (USB 2.0)
  • USB Portable Battery Charger 5V
  • Sony Camera- A7x, RX1, RX100x, RX10 (probably more usable cameras that I’m not aware of)

It’s nice to know that you can charge your batteries in a variety of ways via a portable USB power source powered by: AA batteries, the sun and or pre-charged battery including your laptop USB port!  See below links for more info on some of these products.

Olle - Unfortunately this was altered on the Sony A6000. That is, you can still connect an external power source (like a portable battery) and charge the internal battery, but you cannot use the camera at the same time!

This works fine on the RX100, but that great feature seems to be history now. I am not sure why Sony removed this possibility. But maybe, just maybe, they wan’t to sell more of their own super expensive batteries…

Chris - Hi,

Hope you are well!

Can you power a A7S via 5V USB while it is on and recording?

Anne - Arrived in Italy with a photographer husband, a Nikon D700, a Sony RX10 & only the Nikon charger – for 2 months. Found this page, a laptop, a Kindle USB lead – & a very happy husband!! You’re a lifesaver… Thanks heaps.
